Big Pre-Launch iPhone 3G Roundup

  • Well, tomorrow’s the big day for the iPhone 3G launch and Apple has unleashed a deluge of exciting new content onto the web in preparation for it. A few other folks have got some neat stuff out, too. Here are the things that have caught my eye and will keep you more than busy waiting for 8 a.m. to roll around on Friday:
  • The first iPhone 3G reviews are in and they’re all generally positive, though there are some quibbles and it’s apparently still not a perfect phone/internet device (a judgment I expect to share when I get my hands on one). New York Times
  • Wall Street Journal
  • USA Today
  • New York Times
  • Wall Street Journal
  • USA Today
  • The App Store has gone live, with over 500 apps, 90% of which cost $9.99 or less. You’ll need itunes 7.7 and iPhone 2.0 firmware on an iPhone, iPhone 3G, or iPod touch to take advantage of this.
  • Speaking of, both iTunes 7.7 and iPhone 2.0 can be had right now. ITunes 7.7 can be gotten through Apple’s standard Software Update program. iPhone firmaware 2.0 is available at Apple’s site as a direct download, not yet an iTunes download. As such, it’s really for experts only right now (the iTunes version should appear late tonight or early tomorrow), so I’m not linking to it. If you want it, it’s at Apple’s site.
  • Another neat program, to be had at the App Store, is Remote. This Apple-authored program makes your iPhone and iPod touch function like a remote control for Macs and the Apple TV over WiFi. It’s a free download that requires iTunes 7.7, Apple TV software 2.1, and iPhone firmware 2.0.
